Talent Fairy Talking Points
Musings on the editorial job market from the industry's matchmaker. #editorsmakethebesthires
★ We need more people! Workers in traditional media have long felt the squeeze of newsroom downsizing. Now content marketers are getting pinched. In Contently’s State of Content Marketing Report the industry’s “single biggest challenge in creating high-impact content” is not having enough talent to create it. (Um, I might know a few people.)
★ Salary transparency is contagious. More than half of all job postings in the United States now include a pay range, says a report by Indeed. The recent laws in New York City and states like Colorado and California have had a "domino effect” on job postings across the country. The biggest effect I’ve seen: Editors reaching out in search of a new role after learning they aren’t paid as well as their colleagues.
★ Gen Z is in the driver’s seat. With the trends like the “Lazy Girl Job” and “Bare Minimum Mondays, a habit of job-hopping, and a demand for increased work-life balance, this new generation is making its mark on the workplace. Join me for a virtual panel discussion on how Gen Z is changing the way we think about work — and how we can better mentor and manage them. Sign up via Women’s Media Group.
Translation, Please!
“My biggest learning curve by far was understanding the digital marketing jargon my colleagues and clients would use,” one pivoting editor shared. “There were times when I felt like the calls I would sit in on were in another language altogether.”
I’m teaching a course this fall to help editors make the transition from traditional editorial to the corporate world (marketing, brand publishing, content marketing, thought leadership, etc). Their biggest bugaboo? Learning the lingo and deciphering those annoying acronyms (TOF, KPI, CTR, MVP …). I reached out to my online community of editors who have made the switch to The Other Side for translation assistance. What resulted is a dictionary of sorts for pivoting editors. Is there a term I missed? Reply to this email; I’ll add it to the list!
